Vienna’s culinary scene is booming
Vienna is the capital of Austria as regards good food and drinks. Last year there were quite a number of new developments on the culinary scene in the city. Long-established restaurants had to close, some remain, new establishments opened and, in the meantime, have gained in popularity. Some have become real gastronomic hotspots and highlights!
The best sweet dishes in the whole of Vienna
2017 was also a good year for those who love sweet dishes. Particulary mention can be made of the Crème de la Crème near the University campus in Vienna’s eighth district, Josefstadt. The cozy atmosphere is so inviting that you could easily spend some time enjoying a second cappuccino. The coffee comes from the Akrap roastery and can be recommended without any reservations. This coffee can only be topped by the sweet dishe. Wonderful eclairs, different types of cheesecake, macarons and a great variety of tarts will sweeten even a rainy Sunday afternoon in Vienna. And if you decide to pop in in the morning, you can enjoy a great breakfast here. We recommend the typically Austrian Striezel with apricot jam.

A restaurant full of joie de vivre next to St. Stephan’s Cathedral
Loud, happy, always busy and directly behind St. Stephan’s Cathedral
. All of these attributes apply to the Miznon in Schulerstraße. In addition to Tel Aviv and Paris, now also in Vienna: in the open kitchen, the emphasis is on so-called street food. You place your order and watch as your high quality food is being prepared and then served. The focus is on pita bread with various fillings and ratatouille with a hard-boiled egg and tahini. The star of the restaurant is, however, the cauliflower, which is fried as a whole with nothing more than salt, butter and olive oil.

Bagels – Better than in New York
For a few years now, “Der Joseph” has been present in Vienna, with several backeries as well as an exciting and impressive restaurant in Vienna’s third district, Landstraße. And then last year the pièce de résistance: “Joseph Brot vom Pheinsten” opened a bagel shop, which is located close to the Albertina, the Vienna State Opera and the Helmut Zilk/Albertina Platz. You can enjoy the favourite breakfast dish of New Yorkers either cold or warm. The bagels are of course organic (white Viennese sourdough, perennial rye with malted rye corns and flakes, and Waldviertler malt) and you can add a variety of particularly delicious fillings to your bagels. But if you prefer a classical bagel, simply order it with homemade cream cheese.
