The multi-faceted Danube Island – Vienna’s own island with many exciting events
Musical, sporting or cultural events – the Danube Island is not only the most popular recreational area of the Viennese but also the place to go for a mixed array of events. All around, you will have an amazing panoramic view of Vienna while at the same time having a great time. The Danube Island will not disappoint you! Here you will find some of the events which will be taking place in summer on the Danube Island, for example, the Danube Island Festival.
The Danube Island is a long, narrow, manmade island which is situated between the Danube river and the parallel excavated channel, the “New Danube”. The island is 21.1 km long but only 70–210 m wide.
The Danube Island Festival: the largest open-air festival in Europe
Soon the Danube Island in Vienna will once again turn into a 4.5km long outdoor concert venue. We are referring to the 36th Danube Island Festival. This year’s Festival will take place from 21st to 23rd June and – without having to pay an entrance fee – you can enjoy a varied programme. In addition to more than 2,000 artists from all kinds of musical styles, the headliners in 2019 ‑ Christina Stürmer, Folkshilfe, Mando Diao, Seiler & Speer and Revolverheld – will guarantee a great time for all. Further, this year there will also be a slam karaoke again. Younger visitors are also catered for with their own Children’s Island. And, you are sure to find something to whet your appetite from the many eating establishments on the Island.
Our tip: We recommend that you travel to the Danube Island by public transport – for example, from a CheckVIENNA apartment.

Vienna’s Danube Island also shows its sporting side this year. From 31st July to 4th August, the second Vienna Major Beach Volleyball Tournament will take place. Here the best female and male beach volleyball teams worldwide will compete against each other. The ticket prices start at € 60 and although the Centre Court can hold up to 10,000 visitors, huge crowds are expected this year because hardly any other country has such a large beach volleyball fan community. An event with a festival feeling and numerous side events awaits visitors.
Our tip: Don’t forget to take sun cream and some form of headwear with you. Then you are well-prepared for a day at the (sunny) Centre Court.
