Christmas Shopping Marathon in Vienna

Only in Vienna can you buy all your Christmas presents in one day!

Once again, the wonderful Christmas season has arrived – also in Vienna. And the question then arises of what presents to buy for our loved ones. To avoid any stress in the pre-Christmas period, we have compiled a small Christmas present shopping tour through Vienna for you. Far from the typical hustle and bustle, we would like to present you today with a few streets in the city which have lots of individual and quite unique shops. We are sure you will be able to buy all your Christmas presents easily.

Herrengasse – from Vienna souvenirs to handicrafts

Our first stop is Herrengasse in Vienna’s first district. Due to its location, this street is very popular and in the last few years, it has developed into a true insider tip for individual souvenirs from Vienna as well as for last minute Christmas gifts. It therefore comes as no surprise that, above all between the famous Café Zentral and Michaelerplatz, many shops with a focus on Vienna have opened their doors.

At the Hamtill & Söhne shop in Looshaus, you will find many creative and unusual Vienna souvenirs as well as trendy accessories – with not a hint of kitsch!

However, if you prefer something sweet, you simply have to pay a visit to the Zuckerlwerkstatt (literally, Sweets Workshop). Here, original Viennese sweets are lovingly hand made, according to traditional recipes. You can even watch the sweets being produced and, of course, while watching, you have the chance to try out some of the sweets.

A further handmade rarity is soap from Wiener Seife. There is an amazing range of fragrances to choose from and there is even vegan soap!

We recommend that you simply stroll along Herrengasse and find your inspiration from the many unique shops that you will pass. You are sure to find something to please even those who do not particularly like Christmas.

Beyond Mariahilfer Straße –Otto-Bauer-Gasse

The famous shopping mile, Mariahilfer Straße, is worth a visit every time you are in Vienna. You will find large international chain stores on this street which explains why it can be particularly busy in the run up to Christmas. For this reason, we would like to recommend a few side streets to you, above all Otto-Bauer-Gasse, which is home to some nice bars and restaurants, for example, Otto Bauer, to name but one – as well as many interesting shops.

We would first like to mention the shop, Ampelpärchen Rocks. From fashion to accessories and deco articles, you will find lots here in the popular Viennese Ampelpärchen look. All products are fair trade goods which are manufactured in Europe and which also convey an important message – the Viennese Ampelpärchen stand for tolerance and cosmopolitanism.

A somewhat different type of shop is the Répertoire. Here you will find loads of weird deco articles as well as many quirky things. This is the place to go if you are looking for a truly individual Christmas present.

And if you are in need of some refreshment while shopping, the Snack Shop offers numerous international goodies and drinks.

Regardless of whether you use one for your next city trip, for school or for work, a rucksack from Packpony is always a head turner. All are hand made from independent, European fashion labels and this means that every single bag is unique. We highly recommend them!

Our Tip:

Otto-Bauer-Gasse can easily be reached in only 10 minutes from Herrengasse with the U3 underground line (exit at the Zieglergasse station).

Double shopping possibility in Neubaugasse and Kirchengasse

And if you still have some energy for more shopping, there are two further side streets of Mariahilfer Straße – Neubaugasse and Kirchengasse. Both are only a few minutes’ walk away from Otto-Bauer-Gasse and they run parallel to each other. However, Neubaugasse is somewhat better known. One shop follows the other and it is definitely worth strolling along this street.

But there are also many individual shops in Kirchengasse. In Kauf dich Glücklich, for example, you will find clothing for men and women as well as jewellery and home accessories. In Herr und Frau Klein the focus is on children but not only clothes and toys are on sale here but also things for a child’s room and even prams.

If merely buying presents is too easy for you, then we recommend you pay a visit to Mastnak in Neubaugasse. Here you will find everything which a handicraft enthusiast could ever wish for. The assistants are super and are more than happy to provide advice and assistance so nothing has to stand in the way of great handmade Christmas gifts.

And if you are looking for some Nordic charm, you will find it in Copenhagen Hus. The focus in this shop is on Nordic minimalistic home- and lifestyle.

In addition to the numerous shops, there are also many restaurants and cosy cafés offering delicious food in these two smaller streets if you need a little break from shopping.

Charming shopping street in the 8th district – Josefstädter Straße

You can also shop far away from the masses in Vienna’s smallest district – on Josefstädter Straße. This street is situated between Vienna’s Town Hall and the Gürtel (the road encircling the inner districts of the city) and is popular due to its many shops and cafés. You can take the no.13A bus from Kirchengasse and you need a mere 10 minutes to arrive here.

Hannibal has earned itself a reputation as a store for those with good taste, literally! There are many branches in Vienna and Hannibal is regarded as a high-class importer of trendy food. You will find delicacies from Italy, England and Portugal, for example. Particularly popular are the filled gift bags and boxes – who wouldn’t be happy with a gift basket filled to the brim with delicious food?

An ideal gift at any time are flowers. In Lorenz Pridt you will easily find the perfect arrangement, whether a simply bouquet or a more elaborate flower arrangement. And the best thing about this? The flowers are exclusively grown in local nurseries or from fair trade sources.

Are you looking for something a little more extravagant? If so, Su Vienna is the ideal shop for you. Here handmade jewellery is on offer. A special emphasis is placed on natural materials and elegance. The range includes chains, earrings, bracelets and rings.

Not only Santa Claus (or, as is the case in Austria, the Christkind) can put a smile on children’s faces. Spielwaren Heinz is a toy paradise reminiscent of days gone by as it is full to the brim with a huge variety of toys. And if you need any assistance in choosing the right toys, the staff are more than happy to help. You are sure to find something suitable for children of all ages.
