Vienna‘s diverse and extraordinary theatre scene
There are many sides of Vienna which make it famous, well-known and popular. We could mention the architecture, the extraordinary range of museums it is home to, the many parks and green zones as well as the high quality of living in the heart of Europe. However, above all in the area of art and culture, Vienna is truly a world city and world power. In addition to the numerous museums, the capital offers interested visitors a diverse theatre landscape. It is definitely worth attending a performance when in Vienna!
The English theatre in Vienna

This is the oldest, English-speaking theatre outside Great Britain. Here we are referring to Vienna’s English Theatre (VET), which was grounded in 1963. Since 1974, this theatre has been located in Josefsgasse, in Vienna’s 8th district (Josefstadt).
In this inconspicuous side street, you will find the theatre‘s small entrance. At the latest when you are in the theatre itself, worlds open up. You are guaranteed exciting and interesting evenings with English plays in the beautifully decorated and lovingly maintained auditorium.

The Wiener Burgtheater – the most significant site for theatre lovers

No other theatre in Vienna is as fascinating and impressive as the Burgtheater (the Imperial Court Theatre) from an architectural perspective. It is one of the most important theatres in the entire German-speaking world, if not the most important. “Die Burg”, as it is lovingly and respectfully referred to by the Viennese, is located opposite Vienna’s Town Hall, directly on the world famous Ring (the ring road encircling the city’s first district).
The Burgtheater is Austria’s national theatre and has been since 1888. If you do not have enough time to attend one of the (almost) daily performances, you should at least have a look at the building itself. It is also a wonderful photo motif. It goes without saying that it is also worth observing from within.

The Volkstheater – the people’s stage

Since 1889, performances have been staged in the Volkstheater, which is situated in Vienna’s 7th district (Neubau). Classics of Austrian drama, plays from world literature as well as modern premieres are all sure to amaze theatre goers regardless of their preferences. The programme of a world-class stage could not be more diverse.
The theatre building itself is also worth seeing and very interesting from an architectural perspective, making Vienna’s Volkstheater a perfect motif for an Instagram photo. If you don’t manage to get to a performance, you still have the option of attending one of the many party events in the “Roten Bar”. A perfect location for musical entertainment and some fun.

The oldest theatre in the city

The Theater in der Josefstadt is the oldest theatre in Vienna which still stages performances. Here, in the heart of Vienna’s 8th district, productions have been performed since 1778 (!). At this time, the 8th district was still a suburb of Vienna and not a part of the city. It was only in 1850 that the district – and the theatre – was incorporated into the capital
From the outside, there really is not much to see. The building is well-embedded in this residential part of the city. However, once you step inside the Theater in der Josefstadt – known simply as „die Josefstadt“ by the Viennese – you will be pleasantly surprised. For example, by the wonderful seating area and the glamorous Sträußelsäle. But not only plays are performed in the theatre. The stage and halls are also regularly used for matinees and literary events as well as the renowned JosefStadtgespräche (interviews with famous personalities from the world of art and culture.
