Excursions south of Vienna
What better way to spend the warm months in Vienna than on a day trip? Why not escape the city for a while and head for the countryside? If you do, you will discover well-known and famous places with flair! Most importantly, it should be possible to do the trip in one day and ideally you should be able to reach your destination by public transport. The south of Vienna is particularly suitable for such a day.
Beyond the city gates: Mödling

Just beyond the city limits of Vienna is the Lower Austrian district capital of Mödling. Its main square and the small yet fine pedestrian zone are well worth a visit. There are numerous places to do some shopping in the side streets just outside the centre, which is also a perfect setting if you just want to take a leisurely stroll. There is always something to discover in this town!
A special tram, the Badnerbahn, or a fast train (the Schnellbahn) run regularly from Vienna to Mödling, which makes a day trip easy!
Our Tip: Mödling is also worth a visit in winter as the Christmas Market here is – with good reason – extremely popular.
Baden bei Wien: in the Emperor’s footsteps

The town of Baden near Wien (Baden is literally ‘baths’ and the ‘near Vienna’ part of its name distinguishes it from other towns of the same name) exudes a very special, partly still imperial, flair – a spa resort which has been well-known and popular for centuries. You will discover wonderful Biedermeier buildings from the 19th century, which provide a great subject for photos, as well as a large spa complex with a wonderful thermal bath.
The Casino Baden is located in the spa park itself. If you feel like placing a bet for a few Euros in a sophisticated ambience, Baden is the perfect place to be. The town is also ideally connected to Vienna’s public transport system.
Gumpoldskirchen – a paradise for wine lovers

Located between Mödling and Baden near Vienna, you can discover an especially beautiful jewel which is worth a visit and which is typical for this region: the market town of Gumpoldskirchen. The village, designated a wine village, has many wine taverns (Heurigen) where you can enjoy classic Austrian food.
But we should not forget the wine, which comes directly from Gumpoldskirchen. Many varieties, such as the famous Grüner Veltliner, but also lesser known grape varieties, such as the Zierfandler and the Rotgipfler, are cultivated and pressed here by the winegrowers. Gumpoldskirchen lies on the southern railway line and can be easily reached from Vienna by several fast trains.
Wine region and thermal spa in Bad Vöslau

The town of Bad Vöslau is not far from Baden near Vienna. It is surrounded by vineyards and it is not difficult to see why the town is known as the cradle of the Austrian red wine cultivation. In recent years Bad Vöslau has become increasingly popular as a destination for a day trip, especially among the Viennese. Without a doubt, this is due to the beautiful thermal spa in the heart of Bad Vöslau. The spa is open all year round and offers something for every visitor.
However, the town has much more to offer than, for example, simply swimming in thermal water or relaxing in summer. In addition to a number of wine taverns, there are also wonderful hiking and walking trails, which can be explored at any time of the year. The paths are well marked and often flat, which means they are perfect even for less experienced hikers.
