Enjoy the Christmas season in Vienna
Advent is a perfect season to spend time in Vienna! Because only then does Vienna shine in festive lights and is filled with the aroma of punch, Lebkuchen (similar to gingerbread) and hot chestnuts. This is simply a wonderful time to spend a weekend in Vienna. Here you can do some Christmas shopping, visit Christmas markets, go out for excellent meals and enjoy the beautiful pre-Christmas season.
Combine breakfast and shopping

A perfect weekend in Vienna begins with the perfect breakfast. And in Vienna, with its huge selection of breakfast offers and numerous coffee houses to visit, you will be spoiled for choice. In addition to classics such as Meinl am Graben, where there can be long waiting times especially during the Christmas season, we recommend “Die Vollpension”. It offers many different types of breakfasts as well as delicious homemade pastries in the style of the 1960s. The original concept of the restaurant: the cakes and food are served by grandmothers and grandfathers who, for various reasons, work in Vollpension despite being already retired. And because at grandmother’s not only the food tasted wonderful but her home also had a special granny-feel, the interior is also kitschy in the classic granny style, complete with some egg liqueur.
After a hearty breakfast, you will be ready for a morning in the city, which is the perfect time to go shopping for some Christmas presents. Especially the design market, “Edelstoff”, a pop up store in Vienna’s Marx Hall, is well worth a visit. Handmade products from Austria and some neighbouring countries are sold here between 2 and 3 December. The range of products on sale is wide: individual fashion, art, kids’ design, jewellery and accessories.
If you do not manage to visit Vienna around these dates, no worries! You are sure to find the perfect Christmas present in one of the many, festively decorated shopping streets all over Vienna.

Lunch and ice-skating

After some Christmas shopping, it is very likely that you are pretty hungry. Luckily in Vienna, there are so many bars, restaurants and pubs. These offer vegetarian specialities as well as typical Viennese cuisine.
Slowly you should make your way towards the old town. The rustic “Gasthaus zur böhmischen Kuchl” is situated in the centre and it offers traditional dishes. The interior is rich in detail, authentic and very cosy.
After you have also enjoyed a tasty dessert, you then only have to walk for seven minutes to reach the heart of the city of Vienna – the Rathausplatz (the Town Hall Square). Here you will not only discover one of the largest Christmas markets in the city, but also an ice rink covering several thousand square metres. The perfect location to really let off steam and enjoy the beautiful Viennese old town between the Town Hall and the Burgtheater (Imperial Court Theatre) while ice-skating.
Our Tip: Cooking yourself is also no problem whatsoever in the fully furnished kitchens of our CheckVIENNA apartments.

End your day at an Advent market

In the evening, when it begins to get dark, the festively illuminated Vienna really comes into its own. Why not enjoy a Christmas punch, the perfect drink to warm yourself up after ice-skating? How good it is that there are so many different Advent markets in Vienna. In addition to small gifts, souvenirs and accessories which you can buy to take home with you, you can also enjoy some traditional Christmas fare, for example, delicious punch, tea, biscuits and Lebkuchen.
Besides the larger and at times overcrowded Christmas markets at the Town Hall Square, Karlsplatz and Schönbrunn Palace, there are, however, also some other markets which are well worth a visit. For example, the Advent market at the MuseumsQuartier, which is particularly popular with students and which is located far from tourist crowds. In addition, the Advent markets at Spittelberg, Freyung or Am Hof are also very appealing due to their unique charm.
For those who do not want to visit just one Advent market, but rather five markets in just two hours, you should definitely check out our blog.
