It has become the hotspot from spring until deep into autumn: Vienna’s Danube Canal. Not only the famous festival, “Donaukanaltreiben”, is held here, but also on all other days, especially in the warm months, there are parties and various pubs and restaurants with outdoor areas that are well worth a visit.

One bank of the Danube Canal is located in the 2nd district, Leopoldstadt. And it is precisely here that you will discover the most famous and probably most popular venue on the canal: Tel Aviv Beach. Food, drinks, the possibility to stick your feet in the sand and a good sound make this place so popular with visitors and locals.

Here market stallholders meet trendy cuisine and every Saturday there is also a weekly market. Vegetables, fruit and much more are offered here.

Peace as well as excellent food can be found in the dozens of restaurants and pubs at and around Karmelitermarkt. Here you will find everything you could wish for. From pizzas, to oriental cuisine, and cool bakeries for espresso and cake.

The “little brother” of Karmelitermarkt is the Vorgartenmarkt. Located on Vorgartenstraße, not far from the Prater and the Reichsbrücke. Here it is of course no less trendy.

Also at this market, you will find fruit, vegetables, a good selection of regional organic food, for example at the shop of the organic farm Adamah and an increasingly thriving culinary scene. The trend was started by Mochi’s trendy Asian eating establishment with its Ramen Bar, including electronic sounds from the small speakers in the restaurant.

If you ask the people of Vienna what they most likely associate with the 2nd district, they will usually mention the Vienna Prater, the “green lungs” of the city, the Ferris wheel and the amusement park. This is truly a highlight of the city. Here, you can walk in the meadows or run along the main avenue, cycle, ride a horse or simply relax and take it easy on one of the many meadows – also a perfect place to party, as so many do in summer.

Right next to the Wiener Prater is the so-called “Wurstel Prater”. One of the most popular destinations in Vienna for those going on a day trip and also a hotspot for visitors to the city. Going for a spin on the world-famous Giant Ferris Wheel and enjoying the view of the city is simply something that any visit to Vienna should include.

Vienna is growing steadily. Two million people will soon live in Austria’s capital and Vienna is already the second largest city in the German-speaking world, ahead of Hamburg and after Berlin. There is also a lot of construction going on in Leopoldstadt, where a completely new quarter is even being built. In other words, a city within a city, so to speak

. It is the so-called Nordbahnviertel, literally, the Northern Railway Quarter.

The name refers to the old North Railway Station. Although there is no longer a station, there are new residential units with modern architecture. If you want to get to know Vienna from its modern architectural and urban side, you should take a trip to the Nordbahnviertel, which is only a few underground stations away from the city centre. Slowly but surely a culinary scene is also settling here and giving the new quarter something akin to a soul. Worth mentioning is the new bakery, “Gragger & Chorherr Holzofenbäckerei”, as well as the recently opened “Habibi und Hawara Nordbahn”.
