Accessibility in Vienna

Accessible holidays in Vienna

In Vienna, accessibility is an essential part of the city’s life. Elderly people, people with special needs or families with prams – accessibility can benefit everyone equally. In this blog, we would like to summarise the most important information regarding accessibility in Vienna for you.

Alone, for a couple or for families? Rural and quiet, or rather vibrant and lively? Close to the centre or further away? Regardless of your preferences or desires, our CheckVIENNA apartments accommodate almost every taste.

Our apartments may not have barrier-free bathrooms, but they all have their own fully equipped kitchen, a washing machine and free Wi-Fi. In addition, we have listed some of our apartments, which are, above all, most notable for their size, spaciousness and the availability of elevators. Guests will definitely have ample space to relax and still find room for any aids or prams/strollers:

Spacious apartment for families: 85 m², 3 rooms, maximum 10 people, from € 90 per apartment per night.

Exploring Vienna can be wonderful, but sometimes it can also be a little overwhelming – especially if you have to handle a pram or wheelchair at the same time. And it is in such cases in particular that specialised city guides can help. They not only offer guided tours in different languages, but also tours for people with special needs.

The city of Vienna has also come up trumps when it comes to accessibility. What is meant here, of course, is the interactive, digital city map of Vienna. Among other things, elevators, traffic lights with acoustic recognition and barrier-free footpaths – even including information about the ground – are displayed here.

The majority of museums in the museum metropolis of Vienna are barrier-free, the art museums in particular stand out here.

The Museum of Fine Arts offers a globally unique service for blind and visually impaired people. Three masterpieces have been transformed into 3D reliefs that can be touched. There is also a brochure in Braille.

There are also tactile models in the Upper and Lower Belvedere to experience the art works by touch. In addition, the Upper Belvedere offers special guided tours for the blind and visually impaired with detailed descriptions of various exhibitions.

Schönbrunn Palace offers another highlight. At the main entrance, a bronze model of the Palace on a scale of 1:2000 can now be explored by touch.

A trip to Vienna without visiting one of the many cinemas or the numerous and varied theatres would be unthinkable. Here, too, great attention is now paid to accessibility. The Filmcasino, for example, is not only completely accessible without steps, but also has a barrier-free toilet and wheelchair spaces on site.

A further positive example is the Burgtheater (Imperial Court Theatre). It, too, has a step-free side entrance, an elevator, barrier-free WCs and parking spaces for the disabled. The absolute highlight here: once a month, the Theater4All project holds performances with a live audio description. All images and scenes from the entire production are described acoustically by experienced commentators.
