Vienna: a Dumpling Metropolis

Asian food, Viennese-style

Dumplings, dim sum, baozi, gyoza – the small dumpling snacks from Asia have become extremely popular in Vienna in recent years. Street food from the Far East has become very popular in the capital. In this checkVIENNA blog post, we have put together a small selection of places where you can eat the Far Eastern delicacies and we highly recommend each and every one of them.

The small street food restaurant, Laolao, with its no-frills interior and small outdoor seating area, is located in the wonderful Herrengasse in the centre of Vienna. On the menu, you will find many different types of dumplings to choose from. The dumplings are served promptly, even at the busiest of times, and the friendly staff provide instructions on how to eat them properly. Chinese vinegar and a clove of pickled garlic are obligatory. According to Google Maps, Laolao has a rating of 4.9 stars, which speaks for itself.

Ballroom Dumplings

The Ballroom Crew are hard at work in two locations in Vienna, offering “damn good dumplings”. The selection of dumplings is surprisingly well chosen, both in Alsergrund (9th district) and in the newer branch in the 7th district (Neubau). The latter is located directly in the trendy part of Burggasse, where it intersects with Neubaugasse. Both locations are furnished in a distinctively simple and casual way. Here the focus is on serving those “damn good dumplings” you can read about on their website.

Josefstadt – Vienna’s smallest district – has also embraced the dumpling trend. Here you will find the Hey Dim Sum Gallery. A large restaurant with a garden for guests in the summer, which invites you not only to linger and enjoy some dumplings. It’s also a great place to spend an evening with friends or family. The restaurant in Strozzigasse not only serves Dim Sum – as the name would suggest – but you can also order and enjoy a variety of other Asian dishes.
