Healthy and fast food in Vienna – taking Hawaii as an example
The new year is still young, also in culinary terms. As yet, it is too early to predict what new and exciting trends in the food business await both the Viennese and visitors to the city in 2019. But one thing is clear: it has to be healthy. And it has to be fast. Vegetarian and vegan options have to be available. All these aspects are united in poke bowls – according to Hawaiian tradition – which are becoming increasingly popular in Vienna.

Aitiki Poke Bowls recently opened its doors in Lange Gasse, almost directly opposite the Alten AKH (the city’s old general hospital which is now the campus of the University of Vienna). The restaurant is immediately familiar to guests as, in the warmer months of the year, this is the location of the well-known ice salon, Leones. Because only few ice cream cones are sold in winter, the premises are rented by Aitiki, offering its bowls in the colder months. After some minor adjustments to the interior and with a friendly Aloha, guests are immersed in a South Sea atmosphere. In addition to the hearty miso soup and various types of organic lemonade, there are also diverse bowls on offer here. With fish, meat and, of course, vegan. You can also make up your own bowl from the six “stations” with dozens of toppings to choose from. The restaurant has become so popular in the last few months that the owners decided to extend the opening hours until 8pm. But bear in mind that the small and lovingly furnished restaurant remains closed at the weekend.

Wiki Wiki Poke is centrally located, almost in the middle of Wipplingerstraße. At lunchtime, people from neighbouring offices flock to the cosy restaurant for a quick and healthy lunch. In Hawaiian, Wiki Wiki means “quick” and here, true to its name, the bowls are prepared and ready to eat quickly. In Wiki Wiki, the focus is on high quality and fresh ingredients. All the sauces and dressings which are essential for the mouth-watering bowls are homemade. And this is obvious when you taste the bowls in this restaurant whose motto is, appropriately, “Bowl up your Life”.

Someone has to be the first and it feels as if this was HONU Tiki Bowls. This small but extremely pretty restaurant, which opened in 2017, is located in Vienna’s first district. Here, grey months or bad weather simply become obsolete. The restaurant is light and, as soon as you enter, you are in a holiday mood. Never before was the South Sea so close in downtown Vienna. Also in HONU Tiki Bowls, there is a huge range of bowls, ingredients, dressings and toppings. After a fast and healthy lunch, for example, you are sure to be completely satisfied.

Hawaiian food CHECK – Hawaiian drinks?

In a small side street in Vienna’s 7th district, Neubau, Hawaii is celebrated with typical Hawaiian drinks. There are no bowls served here but instead Tiki cocktails, which, above all in the USA and other countries, have been highly popular for a long time now. We are talking about the Matiki Bar in Gardegasse, a mere five-minute walk from the MuseumsQuartier (MQ Wien). Cocktail culture à la Hawai means: rum as the basic ingredient for the drinks, various fruits and flavours from the South Sea, which guarantees that the cocktails are always refreshing and fruity. Obligatory for a classical Tiki cocktail is also a “crazy” glass or a “flamboyant” cup (see photo above) in which the treats for the palate are served. In summer, you can while away some hours in the small but pretty outdoor area
. And, with every order, you will receive a mini bowl of homemade popcorn.

Fast food and quick snacks do not have to be unhealthy, fatty, with meat or from one of the large chains. In Vienna, this is more than evident in the trend towards healthy, nutritious and individually created bowls.
