In the footsteps of Sigmund Freud

Getting to know and love Sigmund Freud in Vienna

If you have always wanted to get to the heart of the unconscious, you have come to the right place in Vienna. And what better place to start your journey than Berggasse 19 in the city’s 9th district. Probably the most famous couch for exploring the human psyche once stood here. Its owner, Sigmund Freud, is considered one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. Thus, even today, the Viennese cityscape is adorned with sites, monuments and inscriptions dedicated to the founder of psychoanalysis.

Not for couch potatoes!

The Sigmund Freud Museum at Berggasse 19 is home to what was at one time Freud’s living room and practice. Today, it offers intimate insights into his daily life and provides information about the origins of psychoanalysis. Freud lived and worked in this house from 1891 to 1938.

Although the famous couch itself can be found in London, the exhibition includes historical film footage – compiled and commented upon by his daughter, Anna. There is also a newly established library of psychoanalysis, which is a wonderful place to linger and browse.

Only a few steps away from Freud’s former residence is a park dedicated to him, the Sigmund Freud Park. At that time still part of the Votivpark, Freud went there for a walk every day after lunch. Today you can relax and enjoy your lunch break in the park or simply switch off and observe the hustle and bustle.

At most, one is analysed by the chirping birds in the magnolia trees, which are the first to bloom there in spring. In summer, in true Freudian fashion, free deckchairs are available throughout the entire park.

If you want to get even more acquainted with Sigmund Freud, you should don a brooding frown and stroll through the corridors of the University of Vienna. The stubborn free spirit studied medicine there from 1873-1881 and taught as a lecturer in neuropathology.

A tour of the widely scattered main building leads to impressive rooms, magnificent staircases and ceiling paintings in the style of the High Renaissance. Particularly worth seeing are the reading room of the university library and the arcaded courtyard, where a bust of Sigmund Freud can also be found.

An ideal way to take a well-deserved break is with a good cup of coffee. Even the famous Sigmund Freud knew this. Located very close to the university is the Café Landtmann, with which the psychoanalyst had a special connection.

The owner of the café at that time was Anna von Lieben, one of his patients. Like the Café Landtmann, the nearby Café Korb is a Viennese institution. Freud was also a frequent and welcome guest here. The fact that the interior was completely renovated in the 1950s does not detract from its charm at all.

Sigmund Freud spent an entire summer at Bellevue Castle on Reisenberg in 1895. Colloquially known as Cobenzl, the surroundings still invite people to daydream.

It is therefore hardly surprising that a memorial plaque dedicated to Sigmund Freud and his dream analysis was erected there. Nowadays you can stop at the Cobenzl winery, which offers guided tours and, of course, also wine tastings. The excursion is worthwhile not only because of the excellent wine, but for the magnificent views of Vienna which await you!
