Gürtel-Locations in Vienna

Party locations on the „Gürtel“ in Vienna

The “Gürtel”, literally the “Belt”, describes the outer ring road in Vienna. It is 13.1 km long and runs parallel to the famous Ring Road. While the Ring Road encircles the first district of the city, the Gürtel encompasses the inner city districts and follows the route of the former outer fortifications of the city. In the last few decades, the Gürtel has developed into a lively party scene in Vienna. Here there is something for everyone, whatever their taste in music. The area around the U6 underground station, Josefstädter Straße, is particularly popular with party animals and those looking for a good time until the small hours. There are a large number of clubs and pubs to choose from and most are located in the so-called underground arches, directly under the underground line.

Café Carina – the perfect spot to start the night

An ideal party evening begins in the Café Carina, an institution on the Viennese Gürtel which is located directly under the underground station. Here you can enjoy a beer or two or a white wine spritzer in a truly rustic atmosphere before heading off to the nearby clubs to dance the night away. The Carina is especially well-known for its live music and its eccentric guests. If you want to get to know the true Vienna, we recommend you pay the Carina a visit during the week.

The Chelsea – the top dog on the Gürtel

The night club, Chelsea is the institution on the Viennese Gürtel as regards locations for a night out. Here you can dance and party until the new day dawns. Most of the guests are either students or from the younger generation. Inside the club, and in summer also in the outdoor area, you can watch national as well as international football matches on the many screens. During the forthcoming European Champions League, the Chelsea becomes a hotspot for football fans. Further highlights are the live concerts from unknown to very well-known rock bands and musicians. It is always well worth having a look at the programme.

In the Rhiz, everything is a little more relaxed. The small establishment is not really a party and dancing location but still the guests are known to let their hair down and dance the night away in the larger of the two rooms. Lovers of electronic music in particular get their money’s worth here. Both national and international DJs make appearances at the Rhiz. Their cultural programme includes regular readings but also performances. The audience is generally older than in other clubs and bars on the Gürtel. The outdoor area of the Rhiz is particularly poupular in summer – directly on the Gürtel but with a wonderful view of the Ottakring district of the city.

B72 – something for everyone, whatever your taste

There are few locations in Vienna which are as well known as the B72 for live music. Here hip hop artists as well as DJs and rock bands perform on the small stage. This club is a meeting place for both national and international artists. The upper area of the club is especially appealing as you can watch what is happening on the stage and also the dancing guests from the gallery. The B72 is not even a 5-minute walk from the U6 underground stations, Alserstraße and Josefstädter Straße.
