In order to celebrate the New Year in a venerable, imperial style, the New Year’s Eve ball in the Viennese Imperial Palace is the best way to do so. The dress code is long evening gown and a smoking or a tailcoat. Apart from the ball opening and numerous artists and orchestras, the visitors can enjoy a fireworks display with a view over Vienna, accompanied by the chime of the Pummerin (the famous bell of St. Stephen’s Cathedral). Every year, at midnight exactly, the bell rings in the New Year. Afterwards, everyone dances in the New Year with a traditional Viennese Danube waltz.

However, the New Year’s Eve gala in Vienna’s Rathaus (the Town Hall) also guarantees traditional flair of the Viennese ball culture. In addition to a classic ball orchestra, live bands also perform here. The midnight event is a traditional, but also Viennese, stage performance. At midnight, the fireworks can be enjoyed from the balcony of the Town Hall while listening to the sounds of the Pummerin.

On New Year’s Eve, the whole of Vienna is in a party mood! On 31st December 2019, Vienna’s old town will transform itself into the New Year’s Trail for the 30th time. From the famous Town Hall Square (Rathausplatz), to the special New Year’s Eve Village at Maria-Theresien Square, to the Viennese Prater – the turn of the year is celebrated everywhere. Many restaurants, bars and cafés offer hot beverages as well as culinary delights – dance performances and music are, of course, also a part of the celebrations. At midnight, there is a large fireworks display at the Town Hall and in the Prater.

A special highlight is the classic mile on the Graben (literally “ditch” ‑ one of the most famous shopping streets in Vienna’s first district). In the afternoon, a unique open air ballroom is formed, as dancing schools offer crash courses in waltzes.
