Swimming in and around Vienna

Refreshing alternatives to the city’s open air pools

Summertime. When the temperatures in Vienna rise, the population flock to the many open-air pools in the city, which are particularly well attended in the holiday months of July and August. The hustle and bustle in the pools – from Hietzing to Donaustadt – are reminiscent of the “sardine beaches” in northern Italy. Here, we would like to tell you about a few alternatives, where you can jump into cool waters in order to escape the heat of the city.

Strombad Kritzendorf

After a little under 30 minutes from Vienna’s city border, you will arrive at the Strombad Kritzendorf – where entry is free – in the Lower Austrian district of Klosterneuburg. It can be easily reached by car and you can park your car in the large – and free! – car park. You can also travel there comfortably with the Schnellbahn – a fast train – and the Kritzendorf train station is close to the Strombad.

Here you can swim in the Danube – the real Danube. In summer, the water is pleasantly cool and refreshing. Because the current is relatively strong, younger children should always be supervised. When visiting the Strombad Kritzendorf, you will have a feeling that you have gone back in time, to another century. This feeling is enhanced by the characteristic wooden buildings and the small summer houses which are situated there. Although the generous sunbathing areas are well attended in summer, those seeking some peace and quiet are sure to find a place too. It is never really loud here. There is a larger as well as a smaller area with eating establishments, which provide guests with ice-cream, cakes, coffee and snacks as well as larger dishes, such as pizza and schnitzel.

Hirschstetten is a part of Vienna’s 22nd district, the Donaustadt (literally: the Danube city). Almost on the city’s border, there are not only residential areas built in the architectural style of the 60s and 70s, but also a very generous bathing pool. Possibly one could even call it a bathing lake and there is no entry fee at all. In Hirschstetten you will discover several places – both small and large – where you can get to the water to escape from the city heat.

The smaller places in particular are quiet and you can easily spend some time just relaxing here. Only a few residents and visitors seek relief from the heat in the water and simply enjoy the summer from their bathing towels. Most bathers spend the day at the larger bathing areas. Here there are playgrounds for children and some cafés and restaurants. Of particular interest in Hirschstetten is the entrance to the water, which is reserved for dogs, giving them the opportunity to play in the water and to have fun with other dogs. Two-legged bathers will hardly notice this due to the spatial separation of areas.

Roma- und Angeliwiese

The entire Alte Donau (“Old Danube”), from Floridsdorf to Donaustadt, is an especially popular place at any time of the year. In summer you can relax and swim in the many open-air pools. The pools are of various sizes and the free-time activities that they offer are just as diverse. In addition to the open-air pools which require an entrance fee, there are also dozens of places where you can enjoy the waters of the Alte Donau without having to pay a cent.

If you are longing for a comfortable lounging area as well as a refreshing dip in the water, we recommend the Roma Wiese, which is situated in Florisdorf and can be easily reached by the U6 underground line. There is also a large car park, which is free if you would prefer to travel by car
. The bathing area is located directly opposite the popular Angelibad. For hungry swimmers and bathers, there are several cafés and restaurants nearby, for example, the Gasthaus Birner, which also runs its own ice-cream stall. Directly at the car park, you will also find a small stall selling cool drinks and ice-lollies. In summer, the Roma Wiese can be very busy and if you want a lovely place directly at the water, we recommend that you get there as early as you can.

Seestadt swimming pool

Whoever said that not much goes on in Vienna will be pleasantly surprised. Besides the well-known and popular bathing possibilities, a new spot was established a few years ago. The bathing pool in Seestadt Aspern. If you are seeking a cool and free bathing opportunity, simply get on the U2 underground line from the centre of Vienna and continue to the last station. When you leave the underground, you will find yourself in one of the most prestigious projects of Viennese housing – the Seestadt Aspern.

The completely newly built city on the periphery of Vienna offers housing for thousands of Viennese in an architecturally modern environment. And what would a Seestadt – literally Lake City – be without a real lake? This is not only very easily accessible but also promises a pure swimming experience. The local residents in Seestadt in particular like to go sunbathing and swimming here. This means that the swimming and bathing areas are not so overcrowded as Vienna’s Danube Island or the Alte Danube, not to mention the open-air pools spread over the entire city which demand an entrance fee.
