Vienna: Five Christmas Markets in Two Hours

A Christmas Market Walking Tour through Vienna

The period before Christmas is a truly special time in Vienna because hardly any other city offers as many Christmas markets as Austria’s capital. And for this reason, we have compiled a short Christmas market walking tour through Vienna. A tour in which you can visit five Christmas markets in only two hours. From classic to modern, we have included different types of markets. Important elements of a perfect Christmas market are, in addition to pretty Christmas decorations, entertainment and reflective music, mulled wine, tea and the ever popular punch. This alcoholic drink is made with rum or wine, sugar, tea and various Christmas spices. But no worries, alcohol-free punch, also suitable for children, is also very tasty!

The Altwiener Christkindlmarkt (literally, the Old Viennese Christmas Market) on the Freyung, located in front of the Schottenkirche (Scots’ Church) truly lives up to its name. The focus here is on traditional handmade crafts and visitors are treated to a variety of culinary delights while enjoying the entertainment which is offered here.

There are also some additional highlights at this market, most notably, the craftsmen’s demonstrations of their work at the weekend. This can all be enjoyed against a varied musical background. There is also a special children’s programme with handicraft workshops and a puppet theatre which will sweeten the waiting time until Christmas for younger guests.

You will discover the next Christmas market after a five-minute walk from the Freyung. The Am Hof Christmas market is also very traditional and surrounded by historical buildings of Vienna. In addition to traditional and modern artistic goods, you will also be able to buy honey products, handwoven wool clothing and, of course, a wide range of decorations.

This reflective Christmas market is truly special because of the Champagne Bar as well as the Christmas beer, Bock Bier Am Hof, which is brewed especially for the market.

Our Tip: If punch and mulled wine are too sweet for you, you should definitely try out the arolla pine punch.

Continue from the Christmas market Am Hof via the Kohlmarkt, adorned with wonderful Christmas lights, cross Michaelerplatz, walk past the Wiener Hofburg (Vienna Imperial Palace) and shortly after Heldenplatz (Heroes‘ Square) you will reach the Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien-Platz.

This Christmas market is situated between Vienna’s famous Natural History Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts. In addition to the entertainment programme for children, the numerous ideas for Christmas gifts and the handicrafts, you can of course also enjoy some culinary delights. The highlights of this Christmas Market are many music groups and a variety of gospel concerts.

One of the first Christmas markets to open this year is the one situated at Vienna’s Museum Quarter, referred to as MQ. You can go for a punch here and also do some shopping. This Christmas market is, however, less classic and rather modern which makes it a popular meeting place for young people and students in particular.

Special mention has to be made of the many live concerts which are held in the MQ at this time. And just as unique are the extravagant punch creations as well as the moving light projections on the market’s stands.

The last Christmas market on our tour thorough Vienna is situated at Spittelberg, not far from the shopping mile, Mariahilfer Straße. This market is very popular with the Viennese.

In advent, the romantic lanes are home to the countless exhibitors offering their handmade goods. Visitors can stroll through the narrow streets, adorned with Christmas lights, accompanied by delightful scents. And if you are still too cold, even after some punch and mulled wine, why not warm yourself up in one of the many restaurants, pizzerias and bars. The perfect place to end our small Christmas market tour through Vienna.
